Knowing which of the golf irons to select in different circumstances on the golf course can be a baffling decision. Choosing the correct club can often make all the difference in your game. One of the most versatile in your golf iron set is the nine iron.
The nine iron is not to be used if your ball is further than one hundred and thirty yards away from the pin. This club will offer further distance on your shot than a lofting, pitching or chipping wedge will, but it will not help you in achieving the same loft.
The golf iron is a good short range utility club. This club will provide you with good elevation from the fairway to the green. It can be used to chip effectively, and in the event that you do not have a true sand wedge, you may use a nine iron to hit your bunker shots. Hopefully, this will not often be the case. It’s always preferable to avoid what many call the kitty litter.
There are also times when you can use a nine iron in place of a seven or an eight iron. If you are in the range of a hundred and eighty yards away from a dropped green, you may use this club as the alternative. You will, however, probably want to intentionally blade the golf ball to gain some additional distance on your shot. This technique will obviously cause you to loose elevation, but it may prove to be your best choice if a seven or an eight iron will end up being too heavy of an option.
When you need to chip from around a hundred yards or less, the nine iron is the ideal club to select. You can maximize the elevation you will get from the club and still you can cut the distance by placing the ball back in your stance. If you need less velocity when using this club, place your feet closer together. This will naturally take power away from your swing.
It makes little difference if your bag contains a top of the line set of Ping or Callaway golf irons or something a little less pricey, the best club cannot compensate for lack of practice. Whether you’re heading for your favorite local course or planning a special golf vacation, before shooting your next round, spend some time on the driving range with your nine iron so you can determine how far you are able to hit it with the use of your natural swing. Also, practice adding backspin to your shot and learn to take advantage of the varying distance you get on your backspin. Practice and then practice some more.
